Leigh Ann has tried more than 52 weeks of trial in the last decade representing both corporate defendants and health care providers. She has particular depth of experience in cases involving perinatal injury and death, with first chair defense victories. Leigh Ann has established a reputation for her thorough case preparation and for developing effective trial presentations. She has won cases with potential damage awards in the millions, including a birth trauma case with a life care plan in excess of $23 million.
Leigh Ann was selected for inclusion in the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 editions of The Best Lawyers in America in the specialty of Medical Malpractice Law and Personal Injury Litigation. She is an “AV” rated lawyer by Martindale-Hubbell specializing in business litigation and medical malpractice defense. She represents individuals, businesses, hospitals and health care systems of all sizes, including university hospitals, as well as individual and group health care providers and appears before medical, nursing and dental boards.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Leigh Ann Smith earned her J.D., with honors, from Campbell University School of Law in 1995, where she ranked sixth in her class and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. She also served as both Business and Membership Editor of the Campbell Law Review and was a member of the National Moot Court Team. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the Public Sector Committee Member of the Nature Research Center and the Southeast Raleigh Committee of the YMCA. Currently, she is serving on the Board of Directors of New Leaf Behavioral Health.
